Felt Hearts Tutorial

One of my goals this year is to use up my stash. My craft stash. I have a whole bunch of supplies that are just sitting there crying out to be made into something pretty. So while digging through some of the goodies I have placed in perfectly appropriate locations all over the house, I found a BUNCH of felt. With Valentine’s Day coming up, it was obvious what I had to do. Start cutting out some hearts! And by some, I mean a lot.

My little one is a hoarder and loves carrying as many things as possible at one time. So I’m putting these in a cute little basket so she can carry them around easily. She also enjoys throwing. Argh. So I’m sure she’ll love tossing these around.

I think these would also be fun for older kids if you made enough for a game of tic-tac-toe. You could put some taped lines on the table or floor and let them have at it! You might try filling them with beans or rice too. Lots of fun ways to use these!

You will need:

  • Felt
  • Sewing machine and/or needle and thread
  • Fiberfill stuffing
  • Scissors
  • Pinking shears {optional}
  • Fabric marker
  • Heart template {I used a cookie cutter}

1. Start by cutting two squares of felt large enough to fit your heart shape. Trace a heart onto one square. Sandwich the two squares together and cut your heart-shape out. You now have enough hearts to make one felt heart! Now repeat. Until you’ve gone crazy and finally have the total number of hearts you want.

2. Place two hearts together {right-sides-out} and sew around the inside of the heart, leaving a big enough hole to push stuffing through. I aimed to leave about an inch open, but most of the time it was probably closer to a 1/2”. Oopsie. It still worked though, it just took a little more time. Also leave a big enough seam allowance to trim the edges later. At least a 1/4”.

3. Stuff your heart with fiberfill. The less you fill it, the easier it is to sew shut. At least for me because I cheat and use my sewing machine.

4. Sew the opening closed. I’m not great with the hand sewing, so I used my machine.

5. Trim the outside edges with pinking shears. If you want. I think it’s prettier, but that might be because I can’t cut and my sewing is wild. It hides that better.

And done!

I also put together some printable gift tags for this project! I’m tying one to her basket. They have cute little felt hearts to match! You can download them here.Felt Hearts Tutorial and Matching Gift Tag Printable

I’m so excited to give my kiddo a basket of LOOOOVE this Valentine’s Day! What special things will you be doing?

      You and me both! I even have a craft room {although it still needs a lot of work and organization} and I STILL have stuff all over the place! So you are definitely not alone ;) I’m hoping if I concentrate on using things I already have, maybe I can slowly get it under control. Am I dreaming!? Thanks for the sweet comment, Breida!

    I love these! I bet they even be cute on a hair clip or a headband. And you could even add a little felt tooth cutout on the front for a tooth fairy pillow. I absolutely love the hounds tooth felt! It’s one of my all time favorite patterns!

    Very cute! I was just going to make some felt hearts, so you helped me. Now I know for certain how to make them. I was going to do something very similar, but since I want to attache ribbon at the top, your method of using the side as the stuffing area will work really well.
    Thanks!

      Oh good! Perfect timing!! I thought about the ribbon too and then decided against it because I’m a slacker ;) So I’m excited to see yours!! I might have to make a few more with ribbon :)

    Hi Britni,

    So glad I found your blog. I love it. It’s so funny, my reason for starting my blog is about the same as yours. Needed someone else’s ear, other than my hubby’s to fill with all the ideas storming my mind. :0)

    Love it!!
